Microsoft Intune Enterprise Implementation Guide for Unified Endpoint Management
Prerequisites
- Microsoft 365 sau Intune Suite licensing activ
- Acces administrativ la Microsoft Entra ID și Microsoft Intune
Steps
Microsoft Intune is Microsoft’s cloud-native unified endpoint management platform for device enrollment, application delivery, compliance, and endpoint security policy enforcement. This guide explains its enterprise architecture, implementation workflow, automation patterns, and operational hardening practices for production deployments.
Overview
Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based unified endpoint management (UEM) and mobile device management/mobile application management (MDM/MAM) platform within Microsoft Endpoint Manager. Enterprises use it to enroll Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, and specialty devices, apply security baselines, deploy applications, enforce compliance, and integrate endpoint posture with Microsoft Entra ID Conditional Access.
Its core purpose is to centralize endpoint governance without relying on traditional on-premises management stacks. In practice, Intune helps security and workplace engineering teams standardize device configuration, reduce drift, protect corporate data on managed and unmanaged devices, and support zero trust access decisions based on device health.
Architecture
Core components include Microsoft Intune service, Microsoft Entra ID, Windows Autopilot, Apple Push Notification service (APNs), Managed Google Play, device management certificates, and optionally Configuration Manager for co-management.

[Admin] ---- 1. configure policies ----> [Microsoft Intune] [User Device] ---- 2. enroll/authenticate ----> [Microsoft Entra ID] [Microsoft Entra ID] ---- 3. token/device identity ----> [Microsoft Intune] [Microsoft Intune] ---- 4. policies/apps/compliance ----> [User Device] [User Device] ---- 5. posture/compliance state ----> [Microsoft Intune] [Microsoft Intune] ---- 6. compliance signal ----> [Conditional Access] [Conditional Access] ---- 7. allow/block access ----> [Microsoft 365 Apps] [Apple APNs] <---- 8. push channel ----> [iOS/iPadOS Device] [Managed Google Play] <---- 9. app channel ----> [Android Device]
Deployment models:
- Cloud-native Intune only for modern managed endpoints.
- Co-management with Microsoft Configuration Manager for phased migration.
- BYOD with MAM using app protection policies without full device enrollment.
Data flow is straightforward: device identity is established in Entra ID, enrollment creates a management relationship in Intune, policies and apps are delivered over platform-specific channels, and compliance results feed Conditional Access for runtime access control.
Implementation Guide
- Prepare tenant prerequisites: Intune licensing, Entra ID P1/P2 where required, admin roles, Apple APNs certificate, Managed Google Play binding, and DNS/network egress to Microsoft endpoints.
- Verify Microsoft Graph connectivity and install tooling.
winget install --id Microsoft.GraphCLI
winget install --id Python.Python.3.12
mgc login --scopes DeviceManagementConfiguration.ReadWrite.All,DeviceManagementManagedDevices.ReadWrite.All,DeviceManagementApps.ReadWrite.All,Policy.ReadWrite.ConditionalAccess,Directory.Read.All
- Create a security group for pilot enrollment and assign enrollment restrictions.
az login
az ad group create --display-name "Intune-Pilot-Devices" --mail-nickname "intune-pilot-devices"
- Configure Windows automatic enrollment in Entra ID and assign MDM user scope to pilot users.
- Import Windows Autopilot hardware hashes or register devices via OEM.
- Create compliance policies, configuration profiles, endpoint security baselines, and update rings.
- Publish required apps such as Microsoft 365 Apps, Defender for Endpoint onboarding package, Company Portal, and line-of-business apps.
- Integrate compliance with Conditional Access and require compliant devices for Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and other SaaS apps.
- Enable logging and reporting through Intune, Entra sign-in logs, and Log Analytics if using advanced monitoring.
Example Graph deployment file:
{
"displayName": "WIN11-Compliance-Baseline",
"description": "Require BitLocker, Secure Boot, and minimum OS version",
"platforms": "windows10AndLater",
"technologies": "mdm",
"scheduledActionsForRule": [{
"ruleName": "PasswordRequired",
"scheduledActionConfigurations": [{
"actionType": "block",
"gracePeriodHours": 0,
"notificationTemplateId": ""
}]
}]
}
Code Examples
1. Create a compliance policy with Microsoft Graph
mgc device-management device-compliance-policies create --body @win11-compliance.json
2. Assign a configuration profile
{
"assignments": [
{
"target": {
"@odata.type": "#microsoft.graph.groupAssignmentTarget",
"groupId": "11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555"
}
}
]
}
3. Query noncompliant devices with Python
import requests
token = "<access_token>"
url = "https://graph.microsoft.com/beta/deviceManagement/managedDevices?$filter=complianceState ne 'compliant'"
r = requests.get(url, headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {token}"})
r.raise_for_status()
for d in r.json().get("value", []):
print(d.get("deviceName"), d.get("userPrincipalName"), d.get("complianceState"))
Security Hardening
- Enforce least privilege with Intune Administrator, Policy and Profile Manager, and Cloud Device Administrator roles instead of Global Administrator.
- Require MFA and phishing-resistant authentication for all Intune administrators.
- Protect Windows devices with BitLocker, Secure Boot, TPM-backed keys, and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint integration.
- Use app protection policies for BYOD to encrypt corporate app data and restrict copy/paste or save-as to personal storage.
- Scope policies using ring-based deployments: pilot, broad, and high-risk populations.
- Enable Conditional Access requiring compliant devices and approved client apps.
- Audit Graph application permissions and avoid long-lived automation secrets; prefer certificate or managed identity authentication.
Comparison
| Product | Pricing | Deployment | Scalability | Security |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Intune | Per-user subscription, often bundled in Microsoft 365 E3/E5 | Cloud-native, optional co-management | Strong for global Microsoft-centric estates | Deep Entra ID, Conditional Access, Defender integration |
| VMware Workspace ONE | Premium pricing, modular licensing | Cloud or on-prem options | Strong in heterogeneous enterprise environments | Mature UEM controls, strong app/device management |
| IBM MaaS360 | Competitive standalone UEM pricing | Cloud-first | Good for mid-size to large fleets | Solid compliance and mobile threat integrations |
Troubleshooting
- MDM enrollment failure: 80180014 Log sample:
Event ID 76, DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostics-Provider
Auto MDM Enroll: Device Credential (0x0), Failed (Unknown Win32 Error code: 0x80180014)
Fix: Confirm MDM user scope is enabled, user is licensed for Intune, and device is not already enrolled in another MDM.
- Company Portal app install stuck on Android Log sample:
I/IntuneMAM: App install requested
E/ManagedGooglePlay: ENTITLEMENT_NOT_FOUND for package com.microsoft.windowsintune.companyportal
Fix: Verify Managed Google Play binding is active and the app is approved and synchronized in Intune.
- Conditional Access blocks compliant device unexpectedly Log sample:
Sign-in error code: 53000
Device is not in required device state: Compliant
Device ID: a1b2c3d4-e5f6-7890-abcd-1234567890ab
Fix: Check recent device check-in, compliance policy conflicts, and whether the device record in Entra ID matches the Intune managed device object.
Best Practices
Do
- Use dynamic groups for platform and ownership targeting, for example
device.deviceOSType -eq "Windows". - Roll out policies in rings and validate with pilot telemetry before broad assignment.
- Standardize on security baselines plus exceptions documented through change control.
- Integrate Intune with Defender for Endpoint for risk-based compliance.
Don’t
- Don’t assign broad policies to All Users on day one; use staged groups.
- Don’t mix overlapping configuration settings across baselines, settings catalog, and custom CSPs without precedence review.
- Don’t grant automation apps excessive Graph permissions when read-only or scoped permissions are sufficient.
- Don’t treat Intune as only device management; use it as a control plane for identity-aware endpoint security.
